West Hampstead Synagogue Restoration - Runner-up at RICS Conservation Awards
The West Hampstead Synagogue - Grade II & II* listed - refurbishment project commenced on site in November 2007 and was completed in early September 2009. The project included the refurbishment and reconditioning of all major fabric and structures, including extensive work to the roof, the interior walls and ceilings, the exterior brickwork and guttering, and the unique stained glass windows; also the installation of a new heating system, disabled access facilities and modernisation of the lighting and cloakrooms.
CPC was appointed early in the construction phase to resolve a major delay and escalating costs on the project and was then retained to act as client representative to manage the construction phase and support the contract administration activities through to successful completion.
The West Hampstead Synagogue restoration was the Runner-up in the Conservation category of the prestigious Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Awards in May. It was pipped to the post only by the restoration of The Monument which, as such a national icon, had to be the clear favourite.
The entries were numerous, and the short list contained 16 contenders. These included various important buildings by other distinguished architects in the field, such as the Royal Institution, the Royal College of Pathologists, Hall Place, St Botolph’s Hall etc. The judges visited the building twice, asking many questions, and examined the contract documentation and drawings, as well as the planning and background papers.
This is the first such award for a synagogue, and the citation stated that the judges paid particular attention to the “construction materials and techniques used, conservation achievements, background research undertaken and the project’s long-term prospects.” The success is regarded as very much a team effort of everyone involved, and national recognition for a job well done by all.
