Asset Based Assessments – ‘The Asset Approach to Health and Social Care’

The traditional model for health and social care takes the identified needs of the individual or community which emerge from an assessment (e.g. the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment), and then places the responsibility to meet these needs within the public sector through the commissioning of services.

This approach does not take into account the inherent assets and support that exist within both organisations and communities, which may enhance and complement the public sector’s offering. Traditionally, services focus on the deficits and needs of individuals and communities, missing the inherent assets that exist and help to build community resilience.

CPC has developed an innovative approach to asset/strength based assessment, which focuses on the capacities and potential of people, communities and the organisations that serve them. A greater focus on outcomes in the future requires a greater focus on assets, measuring what we already have, on which to build, rather than on what we don’t have.

Asset Approach

Understanding and building community assets, strengths and resources can build sustainable and empowered communities, improve health and reduce health inequalities through supporting the following mechanisms:
  • Augmenting the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment
  • Fostering co-production of health and health care
  • Enabling commissioning for well-being outcomes
  • Supporting community engagement and the commissioning cycle
  • Building a platform for condition management, self care and care closer to home
  • Contributing to demand management and efficiency

CPC can help if:
  1. You would like to build a system within your organisation that captures these assets and builds them into the strategic planning and commissioning processes
  2. You would like to incorporate assets into your existing needs assessments
  3. You would like to raise awareness of assets approaches within your organisation or across your local partnerships
